What is Skymapper?

Skymapper is a state-of-the-art, automated wide-field survey telescope located at Siding Spring Observatory in Australia. Its mission is to create the first comprehensive digital survey of the entire southern sky, providing a detailed record of over a billion stars and galaxies.

How Does Skymapper Work?

Skymapper operates robotically, capturing images using a 268-megapixel camera that covers a large field of view. It utilizes a series of colored filters to gather information about each star's age, mass, and temperature. The data collected is processed and made publicly available for scientific research.

What Makes Skymapper Unique?

Skymapper's unique features include its ability to repeatedly image each part of the sky, enabling the identification of changes occurring within the universe. This allows astronomers to discover rare types of stars, map dark matter, uncover the first quasars and stars to form in the universe, and discover new dwarf galaxies.

Who Are the Founders of Skymapper?

Skymapper was constructed and is operated by The Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The project is led by a team of astronomers and engineers dedicated to advancing astronomical research.
