While the smart contracts were audited during the 2020 relaunch, the primary 'security' risk is economic rather than technical, as the algorithmic peg can fail during periods of low demand.

basis: Project Guide | Latest Updates, Presale & Airdrop

Q: What is the Purpose of Basis?

The purpose is to provide a decentralized, non-collateralized stablecoin that maintains its value through an algorithmic supply-adjustment mechanism.

Q: How Can I Participate in Basis's Ecosystem?

Users can participate by providing liquidity to BAC pools on DEXs or by holding Basis Shares (BAS) to potentially earn seigniorage if the protocol expands.

Q: What Sets Basis Apart from Competitors?

Unlike Tether or USDC, Basis does not require a bank account or centralized reserves, relying instead on game-theoretic incentives and on-chain auctions.

Q: What are the Risks Associated with Basis?

The main risk is a 'death spiral,' where a lack of confidence prevents the price from returning to $1, rendering the Bonds and Shares worthless. As of 2024, the token remains significantly below its intended $1 peg.

Research

Basis is an institutional-grade, research-driven structured alpha platform that uses Base58 Labs’ proprietary market-neutral arbitrage algorithm and sub-50μs low-latency execution engine (BHLE) to allow users to pledge BTC, ETH, SOL, PAXG and other native assets to obtain non-directional, low-risk structured returns.

What is Basis?

Basis (formerly Basecoin) is an algorithmic stablecoin protocol designed to create a price-stable cryptocurrency that functions without centralized collateral. Its mission is to provide a decentralized alternative to traditional fiat currencies by using an 'algorithmic central bank' to manage supply and demand, aiming to keep the value of its stablecoin, Basis Cash (BAC), pegged to 1 USD.

How Does Basis Work?

The protocol operates through a three-token system: Basis Cash (BAC), Basis Bonds (BAB), and Basis Shares (BAS). When the price of BAC exceeds $1, the protocol mints new BAC to increase supply and bring the price down. When BAC falls below $1, the system issues Basis Bonds at a discount, which users buy using BAC, effectively 'burning' BAC and reducing supply. Once the price returns to $1, bondholders can redeem their bonds for 1 BAC.

What Makes Basis Unique?

Unlike collateralized stablecoins like USDT or DAI, Basis is purely algorithmic and seigniorage-based. It was one of the first projects to attempt a decentralized 'central bank' model. The modern iteration, Basis Cash, was launched anonymously to ensure censorship resistance and avoid the regulatory hurdles that shut down the original 2018 project.

Who Are the Founders of Basis?

The original Basis project (Intangible Labs) was founded by Nader Al-Naji, Lawrence Diao, and Josh Chen, raising $133 million from top VCs like Andreessen Horowitz. However, the 2020 relaunch known as Basis Cash was initiated by anonymous developers using the pseudonyms 'Rick' and 'Morty' to maintain decentralization and prevent regulatory interference.

What Key Events Have There Been for Basis?

The original project famously shut down in December 2018 and returned $133 million to investors due to SEC regulatory concerns regarding the 'security' status of its bond and share tokens. In late 2020, the project was resurrected as 'Basis Cash' by anonymous builders, sparking a 'DeFi Summer' trend of algorithmic stablecoins.

Project Announcements

Recent updates have focused on community-led governance and integrations within the wider DeFi ecosystem. However, the project has seen reduced activity as the market shifted toward over-collateralized stablecoin models.

Latest Airdrop

There are currently no active airdrops scheduled for the Basis Cash (BAC) ecosystem. Early distribution was handled via liquidity mining pools in 2020-2021.

ICO Time

The original Basis ICO was cancelled in 2018; the 2020 relaunch had no private sale, focusing on fair launch mechanics.

IDO Time

The project transitioned to a decentralized distribution model on Uniswap in November 2020 with no formal IDO.

TGE Time

The Token Generation Event for Basis Cash (BAC) occurred on November 30, 2020.

Where to Buy Basis Cash?

Basis Cash (BAC) can be traded on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap (V2) and PancakeSwap. It is also listed on some centralized exchanges like Gate.io and MEXC, typically paired with USDT.

Basis Cash Price

Daily Trading Volume

The daily trading volume typically fluctuates between $10,000 and $50,000, reflecting low liquidity compared to major stablecoins.

All-Time High

BAC reached an all-time high of approximately $190.12 in December 2020 shortly after launch, before the algorithm stabilized (and eventually de-pegged).

All-Time Low

The all-time low is approximately $0.0012, recorded in 2023, as the token struggled to maintain its $1 peg.

Market Cap and Valuation

Market Cap

The current market cap is approximately $40,000 to $130,000, ranking it outside the top 2,500 cryptocurrencies.

Fully Diluted Valuation

The FDV is estimated based on the total supply of 54 million BAC, though much of this supply is inactive due to the token's significant de-pegging from $1.

Basis Cash Price Prediction

There are currently no available forecasts from reliable experts or institutional publications that suggest a return to the $1 peg. Most analysts view BAC as a historical DeFi experiment; its price is influenced primarily by residual liquidity and niche speculative interest rather than protocol adoption.
