What is Naver Webtoon?

Naver Webtoon, operating under its parent company Webtoon Entertainment, is a global leader in the digital storytelling industry, primarily focused on webcomics and web novels. Launched in South Korea in 2004, it has pioneered the vertical-scroll storytelling format designed for mobile devices. Its mission is to democratize content creation by providing an open platform where creators can publish their work and connect with a global audience of millions.

How Does Naver Webtoon Work?

The platform functions as a two-sided ecosystem connecting creators with readers. Creators can upload their work through the 'Challenge' or 'Canvas' programs, while the platform uses advanced AI curation and machine learning to recommend content to users based on their preferences. It employs a 'freemium' model where readers can access chapters for free or use digital 'Coins' to unlock early-access episodes.

What Makes Naver Webtoon Unique?

Naver Webtoon is unique for its vertical-scrolling optimization and its innovative integration of technology, such as AI Painter for artist assistance and 'Toon Radar' for copyright protection. It also features a robust adaptation pipeline, turning popular webtoon IPs into hit TV shows and films on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video, creating a multi-layered intellectual property ecosystem.

Who Are the Founders of Naver Webtoon?

Naver Webtoon was founded by Junkoo Kim, a self-described lifelong comic book fan who started the service as a developer at Naver in 2004. As the current CEO of Webtoon Entertainment, he has guided the company from a niche Korean service to a NASDAQ-listed global powerhouse. He is supported by key executives like David J.
