What is Robinhood?

Robinhood is a pioneering financial services platform designed to democratize finance for all. Originally launched as a commission-free stock brokerage, it has expanded significantly into the cryptocurrency space through Robinhood Crypto. The project aims to provide an intuitive, low-barrier entry point for retail investors to trade digital assets alongside traditional equities.

How Does Robinhood Work?

Robinhood operates via a mobile-first application that connects users to both equity markets and cryptocurrency exchanges. For its crypto operations, the platform uses a mix of hot and cold storage to secure user assets. It utilizes 'Robinhood Connect' as a fiat-to-crypto on-ramp, allowing users to fund their accounts easily and trade a curated selection of major cryptocurrencies 24/7 without traditional commission fees.

What Makes Robinhood Unique?

Robinhood stands out by offering a unified ecosystem where users can manage stocks, ETFs, and cryptocurrencies in one place. Key unique features include fractional trading (buying as little as $1 of any asset), a 2% deposit boost on crypto transfers for Gold members, and the upcoming launch of its own Layer 2 blockchain on the Arbitrum stack to facilitate the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA).

Who Are the Founders of Robinhood?

Robinhood was co-founded in 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt. Both founders met at Stanford University while studying physics and mathematics. Before Robinhood, they built high-frequency trading platforms for financial institutions in New York, eventually moving to California to create an accessible trading tool for the everyday investor.
