What is NASDAQ?

The NASDAQ crypto project represents the global exchange's initiative to integrate blockchain technology into the traditional financial ecosystem. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the issuance, trading, and settlement of tokenized versions of equity securities and exchange-traded products (ETPs) directly on its regulated platform. The mission is to bridge the gap between traditional finance (TradFi) and digital assets, enhancing market efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of investor protection and regulatory compliance.

How Does NASDAQ Work?

The system operates by creating digital representations (tokens) of listed stocks that are fully fungible with their traditional counterparts. These tokenized securities are integrated into the issuer's official share registry, providing a regulated bridge between on-chain records and off-chain identity. Settlements are handled through a permissioned blockchain infrastructure, such as the Depository Trust Company (DTC), ensuring that every token transfer carries the same legal weight as a traditional stock transfer.

What Makes NASDAQ Unique?

Unlike synthetic crypto assets, NASDAQ's tokenized equities provide holders with the same material rights and privileges as traditional shares, including dividends and voting rights. The project is unique because it utilizes the existing National Market System (NMS) infrastructure, allowing tokenized trades to be executed on the same order book as non-tokenized shares. This ensures deep liquidity and prevents market fragmentation, while enabling 24/7 trading capabilities and near-instant settlement.

Who Are the Founders of NASDAQ?

The initiative is led by NASDAQ Inc., a leading global technology company serving the capital markets. Key leadership driving the digital asset strategy includes Tal Cohen, President of NASDAQ, who focuses on market infrastructure and technology, and Matt Savarese, Head of Digital Assets at NASDAQ. They have partnered with industry experts like Payward (parent company of Kraken) to build the 'equities transformation gateway' and leverage the xStocks infrastructure layer.
