What is Sberbank?

Sberbank is Russia's largest financial institution, currently evolving into a vast digital ecosystem that incorporates advanced blockchain technology. Its blockchain project aims to provide a regulated and secure infrastructure for Digital Financial Assets (DFAs), enabling corporate and retail clients to issue, trade, and manage tokenized assets such as debt obligations, gold-backed tokens, and real estate-linked digital rights.

How Does Sberbank Work?

The Sberbank blockchain platform is built on Hyperledger Fabric and is designed for compatibility with the Ethereum ecosystem, allowing for the transfer of smart contracts and integration with tools like MetaMask. It operates under the regulatory oversight of the Central Bank of Russia, using smart contracts to automate transactions and settle payments in digital rubles or other tokenized forms of value within a permissioned environment.

What Makes Sberbank Unique?

Sberbank is unique for its hybrid approach, bridging traditional state-backed banking with decentralized finance (DeFi). Key features include its compatibility with Ethereum-based dApps, the ability for corporate clients to issue their own tokens (Sbercoin stablecoin and DFAs), and its direct integration with the 'Sberbank Online' app used by over 100 million people, making digital assets accessible to the general public without a steep learning curve.

Who Are the Founders of Sberbank?

Sberbank is a state-controlled bank with a majority stake held by the Russian Federation. The digital and blockchain initiatives are led by the senior management team, most notably CEO German Gref, who has been a vocal advocate for digital transformation, and Alexander Nam, the Director of the Sberbank Blockchain Laboratory, which was established in 2018 to spearhead the bank's Web3 and DeFi research.
