What is J.P. Morgan?

J.P. Morgan is a global leader in financial services, offering solutions to the world's most important corporations, governments, and institutions. In the blockchain space, J.P. Morgan operates through Kinexys (formerly Onyx), a business unit dedicated to building cutting-edge financial infrastructure using distributed ledger technology. Its primary mission is to re-architect traditional financial systems to enable real-time, 24/7 global value transfer and asset tokenization.

How Does J.P. Morgan Work?

J.P. Morgan utilizes a permissioned (private) blockchain network called Kinexys to facilitate wholesale payments and asset management. The core of this system is JPM Coin (rebranding to Kinexys Digital Payments), which acts as a deposit token representing U.S. Dollars or Euros held in designated J.P. Morgan accounts. Transactions are processed through smart contracts, allowing for instantaneous settlement, automated clearing, and reduced reliance on traditional systems like SWIFT.

What Makes J.P. Morgan Unique?

J.P. Morgan is unique as the first major global bank to create its own blockchain-based payment system and digital currency for commercial use. Unlike public cryptocurrencies, JPM Coin is a 1:1 backed deposit token specifically for institutional clients, ensuring regulatory compliance and stability. Key use cases include 24/7 cross-border transfers, intraday repo markets (settling billions daily), and the tokenization of traditional assets like money market funds.

Who Are the Founders of J.P. Morgan?

While J.P. Morgan is a historic institution founded by John Pierpont Morgan, its blockchain division was pioneered by modern leaders within the firm. Key figures include Umar Farooq (CEO of Kinexys and Co-Head of Global Payments), who has been instrumental in the platform's commercialization, and Naveen Mallela (Global Co-Head of Kinexys), a primary architect of JPM Coin and a leading expert in central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
