What is ODL?

On-Demand Liquidity (ODL), now often integrated into Ripple Payments, is a financial technology solution developed by Ripple. Its primary mission is to modernize cross-border payments by using the digital asset XRP as a 'bridge currency,' allowing for real-time settlement without the need for traditional, capital-intensive correspondent banking relationships.

How Does ODL Work?

ODL streamlines international transfers through a three-step blockchain process: first, the sender's local fiat currency is converted into XRP at a digital asset exchange; second, the XRP is transmitted across the XRP Ledger (XRPL) in seconds; finally, the XRP is converted back into the destination fiat currency at a local exchange and deposited into the recipient's account.

What Makes ODL Unique?

Unlike the traditional SWIFT system that requires banks to maintain pre-funded 'nostro/vostro' accounts in foreign countries, ODL sources liquidity in real-time. This eliminates the need for billions in idle capital, reduces transaction costs by up to 60%, and enables 24/7/365 settlement that completes in 3-5 seconds rather than days.

Who Are the Founders of ODL?

ODL was developed by Ripple (formerly Ripple Labs). Key figures include Chris Larsen, a venture capitalist and co-founder of E-Loan, and Jed McCaleb, a well-known developer in the crypto space who created Mt. Gox and later co-founded Stellar. The project is currently led by CEO Brad Garlinghouse, who has extensive experience in tech leadership at companies like Yahoo and AOL.
