Q: How Can I Participate in Thunes's Ecosystem?

Businesses and financial institutions can participate by joining the Direct Global Network as members to send or accept payments. Retail users participate indirectly by using apps (like PayPal or Grab) that leverage Thunes' infrastructure for international transfers.

Q: What Sets Thunes Apart from Competitors?

Unlike traditional systems like SWIFT that can take days, Thunes offers real-time settlement and 100% transparency on fees. It also bridges the 'last mile' by reaching billions of mobile wallet users in emerging markets where banks do not operate.

Potential risks include regulatory shifts in cross-border payment laws and the volatility of digital assets used for settlement. Thunes manages these by maintaining a massive license footprint and using regulated stablecoins like USDC.

What is Thunes?

Thunes is a global B2B cross-border payment infrastructure company that operates the "Direct Global Network," often described as a "Smart Superhighway" for money. It connects diverse payment systems—including banks, mobile wallets, and stablecoin wallets—to facilitate real-time international transfers. The mission of Thunes is to bridge the gap between fragmented local payment systems and the global economy, making financial movement as instantaneous as information flow.

How Does Thunes Work?

Thunes works by providing a single API that connects members of its network to over 140 countries and 90 currencies. It integrates traditional banking rails (like SWIFT and ACH) with modern digital assets (like USDC and XRP). In its blockchain-enabled flows, Thunes uses technologies like Ripple Payments to facilitate settlement, allowing funds to move from a bank account in one country directly into a mobile or stablecoin wallet in another within seconds, bypassing the slow multi-tiered intermediary bank system.

What Makes Thunes Unique?

Thunes is unique for its massive interoperability between the "old" and "new" financial worlds. It enables 11,500 traditional banks on the SWIFT network to send payments directly to 500 million stablecoin wallets without new technical integrations. Key use cases include gig economy payouts to creators in emerging markets, transparent B2B treasury flows, and real-time remittances that reach billions of endpoints, including unbanked populations using mobile money like M-Pesa and GCash.

Who Are the Founders of Thunes?

Thunes was founded in 2016 in Singapore by fintech veterans Peter De Caluwe and Eric Barbier. Peter De Caluwe, the current CEO, is a serial entrepreneur with extensive experience in payments, having previously held leadership roles at Naspers. Eric Barbier, who also founded TransferTo (now DT One), brought deep expertise in mobile airtime and remittance technology to the project. Together, they scaled Thunes into a global infrastructure provider with over $360 million in funding.
